Newfoundland and Labrador will sign a Friendship Agreement with the State of Maryland today. John McDonough, Maryland's secretary of state, will join Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dan Crummell at a siging ceremony this morning in St. John's. The agreement is meant to strengthen tourism and trade ties between the state and province. Maryland and this province also share a common bond in that both were settled by Sir George Calvert. The friendship agreement will be signed at Confederation Building.
A St. John's contractor facing a raft of charges is due back in court today. James Dwyer faces a total of 41 charges, most of them for fraud under $5,000, and breaches of court conditions. Dwyer is accused of defrauding customers by promising to do contracting work, but failing to complete the jobs. The case is expected to continue until Aug. 2.
