From CBC's Catherine Cullen:
The Conservatives say if re-elected they would introduce legislation to stop any future government from ever raising taxes.
Speaking in Rivière-du-Loup, Que., Stephen Harper revealed his plans for what he calls a "tax lock" - a law to prevent increases to federal income tax, sales tax and what he calls "discretionary pay roll taxes", such as Employment Insurance premiums.
Any value of such legislation would be highly symbolic since it would carry no consequences for raising taxes, though Conservatives say it would have to have to be repealed by the government who wants to raise taxes.
It's intended to contrast the Conservatives and their rivals. The NDP, for instance, have proposed an increase to corporate taxes and the Liberals have called for an increase in taxes for the wealthiest Canadians to finance tax cuts to the middle class. -

I think it's a waste of time to have Trudeau and Mulcair at each other all the time, but until we change our voting system, that's the nature of their strategy.

Family reunification immigration is probably one of the worst kinds. The immigration of senior parents doesn't contribute much to the tax base, and they generally stay at home and babysit their grandchildren in exchange for a home and maybe an allowance. Shouldn't the focus of our immigration be on young skilled people as boomers take retirement? Is OAS available for seniors that have never worked in this country?
Maureen Carlvia Facebook at 3:10 PM
Too much focus on immigrants and not enough focus on those who are low income earners and those in poverty. Plenty of talk about people who are middle class (making 120,000). What about the little people who are struggling to keep the power on, keep the gas on, keep the water on and keep food on the table, and a roof over there head. What about them or the little to far and few decent job opportunities out there but mostly minimum wage part time and temporary jobs to be had. What is being done for them? Enough with helping out immigrants if we are failing at helping our own...

French-language leaders debate: Quebec panel tallies score
There was a feisty face-off for the five federal leaders in last night's French-language debate. And in an election where every vote counts, their ability to win or lose in Quebec could make all the difference for the country at large. We parse their performances, with our panel of political watchers. -
All three of the top Google questions last night involved the niqab.

Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau has penned an open letter to public servants as his party and the New Democrats fight to woo federal government workers in target ridings such as Ottawa Centre.
The Grits are trying to capitalize on the public, and often nasty, battle between the bureaucracy and the federal Conservatives.
The strained relationship has been the focus of attacks launched by public sector unions during the course of the campaign.
In July alone, the Public Service Alliance of Canada announced it would spend $2.7 million on a pre-election ad blitz to take aim at what it called "reckless Conservative cuts" to government departments.
The union also launched a Charter challenge against Bill C-59. It claims the legislation gives the government power to amend provisions in federal government employee contracts withoutnegotiations.
In his letter made public on Friday, Trudeau vowed to bargain in good faith with public sector unions and work in partnership.
"Respect and trust for our public servants by the federal government has never been so low," the letter states. "I want to take this opportunity to assure you that I have a fundamentally different view than Stephen Harper of our public service." - Canadian Press
