Canadian politicians all think they can bond with the person in the White House. Good luck with that, says the CBC's Neil Macdonald.

Canada is inconsequential to the Americans. Most Americans cannot find us on a map and the only thing they know is we have "socialized' medicine, which they equate to socialism or communism (neither of which they know the definition of.) The only thing that matters in the US in money - you follow the money - and the money is China. China owns most of the US debt, so this has provided very liberal (oops cannot use that word in the US) access for the Chinese to the US market. It IS about money, and financially - even though Canada is their largest trading partner (primarily as a result of oil), WE do not matter to the US. The leadership of the US is irrelevant.

I find none of our politicians to be overly insightful towards conditions at home or abroad. Obama is the easiest to be comfortable with.
Timothy Brettvia Facebook at 8:23 AM
You people talk like "YOU" have the inside track on Obama and Harper for that matter. It really is a joke. How could anyone but the very closest insiders know what really goes on? Give your heads a shake. The world of politics is a dirty world that is under cover. We see only what "they" want us to see. We can only form opinions and make voting decisions on the information given to us. We have to hope that our "guesses" are the best. Wake up folks, it is 2015!!!!!!!!!
Jan Williamsvia Facebook at 12:02 PM
"Good luck with that" seems narrow minded and defeatist. Does that mean we shouldn't bother. We need each other in many ways. We should always try to enhance dialogue by understanding our differences and specific needs. Harper has damaged that relationship but not destroyed it. Obama policies seem to fit well with the Liberal values and balanced approach.

Most of the time our leaders don't get along, Dief hated JFK, Nixon hated Trudeau, the countries and the people get along most of the time.

A rundown of Harper's media availability:
Question:
You claimed success last night in fighting ISIS. You said that about the Taliban years ago, and 158 Canadian soldiers died. Now Taliban under resurgence and have taken Kunduz.
Answer:
Do not see same threat emanating from Afghanistan as was the case when we started to fight. Challenges remain in that country. The ISIS advance has for the most part been halted. They were sweeping across the region. That has been stalled. Its mission is the spread of global jihadist terrorism. Should it have a large base of operations, would use it to launch attacks all around the world, including against this country. Need to make sure we keep on ISIS, to keep them pinned down. Other parties want to get out of the campaign agianst ISIS. Unable to explain how that would do any good.
Question:
Can you reassure producers in Canada? For three days you have said you will defend three major pillars of supply management. People demonstrating on Parliament Hill today are concerned. What can you tell them about the concessions you will make?
Answer:
We have said that there are always concerns when discussions happening as part of trade talks. The presence of this system of Canada is a decision for Cdns, not a decision for foreign countries to be making.
Question:
Unifor president has said auto sector is nervous and furious about leaks out of TPP. If Japan does not concede in this area, is this not putting a countdown clock on the Canadian auto industry?
Answer:
This government took measures to intervene in 2008-09 period that were unprecedented, to safeguard the auto industry, which exports 85% of its products. Make sure in these talks that we are part of the global market. Will only sign a deal that is in the best interests of the country.
Question from CBC's Tom Parry
Canada has been advised to play a greater role at the UN. What would you do if re-elected?
Answer:
Canada is heavily engaged at the UN. I am not there this week because of a national election campaign. Represented by officials there this week. Strong supporter of virtually all UN programs. Flagship maternal/newborn health. Second largest contributor on food programs. Have said repeatedly that this government does not necessarily base all its decisions on what is popular at the UN. Global movement to isolate and attack Israel. We defend its right to exist as a Jewish state,.
Question:
Ontario judge throws out mandatory min in grow ops. Your reaction?
Answer:
We will study this particular decision. Important that those who traffic drugs, destroy lives, face maximum penalties under the law. There are situations where it is inconceivable that a court delivers a sentence that does not include some time in prison. Liberals are way offside with Canadian views.
Harper returns to earlier questions on trade negotiations:
A thousand different interests that have to be looked at. Previous Liberal governments have not been able to complete trade deals because 99 per cent of the time, when someone complains, they walk away from the table. Conservative governments have been able to open market access. We are not going to walk away from a trade negotiation "at the first sign of worry." -

A partial rundown of Trudeau's media availability:Question about steel industry.
Answer:
Have to ensure Canadian jobs and interests are being defended, in a way that's transparent and clear. Harper makes decisions based on politics, not Canadians' best interests.Question:
You said yesterday that Canada cannot afford not to be part of international trade pacts, but you would protect supply management. How would you do both?
Answer:
Canada has always signed pacts such as NAFTA without questioning important systems like supply management. Won't get into TPP hypotheticals.
Question:
But you want to be PM.
Answer:
There is no country in the world that does not significantly subsidize its producers. Canada does too, based on clear principles. Should be able to protect this while letting jobs flourish.
Question:
Debates have not had the same reach as network debates. Having the same impact?
Answer:
Happy that I have an opportunity regularly to talk about our plans. Look forward to our next debate on Friday.
Question:
How would you compromise on TPP
Answer:
We're not in a global free market when it comes to agriculture. Every country protects its industry. Engage in a substantive way, openly and transparently, so that Canadians will know what's being put on the table. We need a PM who is making a case for trade. -
