Monthly growth in June prompted hopes that the economy may have turned the corner, and a second straight expansion in July — even a tiny one — suggests that may be the case.

A recent survey shows half of 1,800 Albertans questioned would support a carbon tax and are willing to pay it.
The Ekos Research poll -- done for the Pembina Institute -- also reveals that support for the tax would stand up, even if it were applied to individuals as well as companies.
Many respondents believe Alberta has a responsibility to reduce carbon emissions, and about two-thirds say the government should put less emphasis on making the oil and gas industry more competitive.
Ekos says the survey is considered accurate to within 2.3 percentage points, 19 times out of 20. - Canadian Press

Alberta Premier Rachel Notley says she strongly supports the federal NDP's plan to combat climate change -- just not a cap-and-trade system that could potentially draw money out of the province.
Notley panned cap-and-trade in a speech in Montreal earlier this week, leading to suggestions of a rift between her and federal NDP Leader Tom Mulcair.
She says the perceived difference between the branches of the party was an inadvertent misunderstanding of her remarks in the speech.
Mulcair's plan would allow provinces to opt out if their efforts to fight climate change were as good or better than a national strategy. - Canadian Press

At a Mid Autumn Festival celebration in a Toronto suburb Tuesday night, Stephen Harper took the stage in front of hundreds of Chinese Canadians and was handed a brush for the traditional painting of the lion's eyes, done to awaken the sleeping giants so they can begin to dance.
Harper had his choice of coloured beasts to anoint but of course chose the one in Conservative blue.
The Conservative leader was at the event in Richmond Hill, Ont., to awaken another giant -- the Chinese Canadian vote.
There are an estimated 1.4 million Canadians of Chinese origin, and in several of the coveted ridings in the greater Toronto area in particular, they are the dominant ethnic group.
The Conservatives should be their natural party, Harper told a banquet hall where people stood in the aisles ten deep, many holding their phones aloft to record his remarks.
"A strong work ethic, a commitment to education, dedication to family and faith are keys to success," Harper said.
"These are the values of the Chinese Canadian community and they are also Conservative values." - Canadian Press

The vast majority of Albertans I think are supportive of climate leadership, which is obviously very positive to see.
Alberta government must reduce carbon emissions despite cost to energy industry, poll suggests
More than half of Albertans want the province to adopt stronger climate change policies, even if that means oilsands producers are faced with higher costs, a new poll suggests. -

Conservative Leader Stephen Harper issued the following statement about today's announcement that July's GDP growth was 0.3 per cent:The protection of our economy is our number one priority. Our balanced budget and July's GDP growth demonstrates again that our plan to protect Canada's economy, lower taxes and create jobs is propelling our economy forward. Our low-tax, pro-trade, Economic Action Plan is helping Canada's economy grow, led in part by gains in the manufacturing, finance and resource sectors. As we face increasing volatility in the global economy, Conservatives will continue to focus on creating new jobs and making life more affordable for Canadians. Now is not the time for higher taxes or permanent deficits. The Liberal and NDP plans will destabilize the economy by imposing job killing EI and CPP payroll taxes on every worker and employer in this country, and cancelling benefits to families and seniors.
