John Sauder, CBC's meteorologist in Manitoba, keeps track of weather moving across the province.

Now that there is a snow cover on the ground, a sunny day isn’t really going to do the trick to warm us up. Fresh snow reflects about 95% of the incoming solar radiation.

Also, now that the clocks have changed back to standard time, our daytime high (in a typical weather pattern) will be earlier in the afternoon. Today, we only get to -7 which is the normal overnight low.

I’m watching a cold front that will swing through the central part of the province today. With it, some lake effect flurries on the east side of the lakes and possibly some flurries through the Red River Valley this evening.

Tuesday brings a mix of sun and cloud and, again, some late day flurries into Wednesday. I’m not expecting much in the way of accumulation.

It’ll certainly feel like winter is here this week. Daytime highs will be below zero for the rest of the week although there is some moderation toward the weekend.

We could also see more flurries on Friday.

Get the shovels ready. A snowy system is moving through southern Manitoba today.

    Futurecast Saturday Afternoon:

There is a Snowfall Warning in effect for pretty much all of southern Manitoba. Generally, 5-10cm is what I'm expecting but as much as 15cm could accumulate depending on how much melts on contact.

The system tracks out of the province Saturday night dropping similar amounts in NW Ontario.

Behind the snow, temps will drop through the day on Sunday with a gusty northwest wind in the morning.

That takes us into much cooler weather for the first part of next week.

Friday starts with some sunshine but as we get into the afternoon, clouds thicken ahead of some snow Friday evening and overnight.

I think there’s a good chance for a coating on the ground by Saturday morning, then the wet snow continues through the day with a high of zero. Depending on how much melts on contact, there could be 5-10cms on the ground Saturday afternoon.

Not exactly what I would call a bright day across the south on Thursday. There will be a few sunny breaks and there is a slight chance of the shower off Lake Winnipeg, but no accumulation.

Under a partly cloudy sky tonight, we’ll drop to -10 degrees with light winds. Friday starts with some sunshine but as we get into the afternoon, clouds thicken ahead of some snow Friday evening and overnight.

Things start to change somewhat as we head into Wednesday.

Wednesday welcomes in November with some snow. It’ll be the wet variety of snow on into the evening and right into Thursday morning. Depending on how much melts on contact, we could end up with a coating of 3 or 4 cms by Thursday morning.

Thursday still doesn’t bring us much sunshine across the south with a cooler high of -1.

Friday is another chilly day with a high of  -2 and a mix of sun and cloud. Then, I’m tracking more snow heading toward us for the weekend.

    Weather Journal for October 31st

Our Halloween will be a little bit scary, but really, could be a lot worse. This will likely be the coldest Halloween since 2006 and the first one since that year in Winnipeg with a high temp that stays below zero.

We should be right around -2 to -3 for the period tonight when the kids are out trick or treating.

    Weather Journal for October 30th

Last week I said Monday would be “raw’. I think that’s a fair assessment. Winds are gusty, it’s generally cloudy, we have occasional flurries, and the temps are struggling to reach zero.

Tuesday will be a little brighter, although cloud over in time for the kids to head out to collect candy. Expect a mix if sun and cloud and a chilly high of -1. Winds also pick up in the evening. Dress for the chilly conditions if you are taking the kids out.

    John's Weather Journal October 27

Let's look back to yesterday evening for a second. Bridges iced up all over the city during the rush hour. To me, this was not a surprise.

The winds were not stronger than forecast, at least not my forecast. We did not experience a band of freezing rain either. We need a deep enough layer of warm air aloft to produce melting, then below freezing temperatures at the surface to super-cool those rain drops which then freeze on contact with surfaces. We did have wet snow and temperatures were slightly below freezing. The clouds were starting to thin, the temperature was dropping as a result of radiational heat loss and that is why the bridges iced up first.

Okay, now today, the sun will do its best to sneak between the clouds and get us to 3 degrees. Nice to have the lighter winds.

Saturday starts with sunshine and calm conditions. There’s a good chance we’ll be dealing with lower visibilities due to patchy fog on Saturday morning. In the afternoon, cloud rolls in with a high of 4 degrees and the wind starts to pick up again.

Expect another band of snow Saturday evening (any time between 7pm and 1am Sunday).  It’ll be a wet snow as temps will stay close to zero overnight.

Sunday is a cloudy day with a seasonal high of 6 degrees, and the winds really get going in the afternoon as a cold front passes. (NW @ 30/50)  We’ll also have some afternoon showers changing to evening flurries on Sunday.

Time to throw the snow brush in the car for good. Monday brings more flurries, windy conditions and cool temps that will hover just above freezing.

Tuesday (Halloween) is a dry day with a sun/cloud mix but the kids will have to wear a heavier coat under the costume. Expect a high of just 2 degrees in the afternoon. Cooler when the kids head out to collect candy.

Friday, the sun comes out, and winds remain light. Saturday starts with sunshine but I do see another band of snow Saturday night into Sunday.

We could even be dealing with some freezing rain early Sunday morning followed by showers later in the day.

The normal high is now 6 degrees. Looking into next week, highs will be closer to 2 or 3 degrees.
