Thursday is another light wind day but it’s the last one for a while. There is a slight chance for a flurry or two this afternoon with a high temp right around 3 degrees.
I’ve been looking for a few breaks in the cloud cover but that appears to be staying west for now. We’ll likely see a few clear patches here in the Red River Valley this evening, then again on Friday morning.
Friday, expect a gusty wind picking up in the afternoon. Friday’s high temp will be close to 4 degrees but it will turn out to be a cloudy day ahead of a band of snow overnight Friday into Saturday.
RPM Snowfall Projection up to Saturday Mid Day It’s still looking like a messy weekend with wet flurries and fairly windy conditions on Saturday, and some wet snow, possibly mixed with a bit of rain, again on Sunday.
Some of the forecast guidance is calling for accumulating snow across the south between Friday night and Sunday afternoon but, how much snow is a tough call based on how much will melt as it hits the ground.

Not much change in the cloudy outlook here across the south. There is also a slight chance for some scattered light flurries later in the day and into the evening.
It’s also surprisingly calm as far as wind is concerned. Dew point temps will be very close to surface temps tonight and winds will be quiet so I’ll go with a risk for some patchy fog into Thursday morning.
Visibility Forecast Early Thursday Based on RPM Model Thursday is another light wind day with a chance for a few sunny breaks in the afternoon. Expect a high temp right around 3 degrees.
Friday, same kind of day but with a stiff breeze picking up. Friday’s high temp will be close to 4 degrees. That’s ahead of a band of snow overnight Friday into Saturday.
It’s still looking a messy weekend with wet flurries and fairly windy conditions on Saturday, and some wet snow, possibly mixed with a bit of rain, and windy conditions again on Sunday.

With the lack of wind today, the flurries are falling straight down. It’s not all that uncommon to see some snow even after the vernal equinox (this morning at 11:15).
We’ll likely see more snow as we approach the weekend as well. It’ll be wet snow though with temps up around 2 or 3 degrees in the afternoons.
In the meantime, we have lots of cloud cover and occasional flurries. Our next chance for some sunshine is Thursday, most likely in the afternoon.
It’s back to cloud cover on Friday and through the weekend and it does look like a messy weekend with wet snow on Friday night, wet flurries Saturday, and some light snow possibly mixed with rain on Sunday.

The thing that stands out to me with this week’s weather is the lack of sunshine.
We’ll see a few sunny breaks early in the afternoon today but clouds thicken up later with a few flurries moving in. That snow is on radar in the southwest and moving northeast into the Red River Valley.
Satellite/Radar - Flurries to the Southwest as of 1pm The seasonal normal high is now at +1 and we’ll be close to that number on each of the next two afternoons.
The Spring Equinox is Tuesday morning at 11:15.
The next best chance for some sunshine would be on Thursday with a mix of sun and cloud and a high of 3 degrees.
It’s back to cloud cover on Friday and through the weekend and it does look like a messy weekend with wet flurries on Friday night and Saturday, and some light snow on Sunday.

Sunshine, light winds and slightly milder today. I sound like a broken record!
Saturday won’t be much different across the south but that will be the brighter day of the weekend.
Cloud rolls in Saturday night into Sunday. We will see some sunny breaks on Sunday but it will be generally cloudy with a high temp near the freezing mark.
Things do get a little more interesting next week with a chance for some light snow Monday afternoon. If that system misses, it’ll be to the south.
We’ll be back to some sunshine by Tuesday and Wednesday with temps gradually sneaking above zero again.
It’ll be much warmer by the end of next week and the long range models are hinting at some weather for later on Friday into Saturday. I’ll track that one with a keen interest and keep you posted

If you like sunshine and a slow melt, I’ve got the forecast for you.
Nothing but sunshine today, Friday and Saturday. Late day Saturday, we start to see some cloud cover which will stick around through the second half of the weekend.
Temps are close to the seasonal normals, even a little below, through the next several days.
Why our weather is so stable lately is really all about the upper level ridge that dominates the prairies. We are under a strong ridge and surface high that will keep us in the sunshine for the next few days.
Omega Block Pattern Not Moving In the north, it’s also a sunny day with highs in the minus single digits for the most part.
There is a little more cloud along the Hudson Bay coast through Thursday but skies will brighten up for Friday.

Well, this weather pattern is a real ‘yawner.’ That is actually good news though if you like sunshine and a slow melt.
An Omega Block is setting up to our west with eastern Manitoba right under the jet stream diving to the south. That means not a lot of change in the pattern.
John's 7-Day Forecast Temperatures will be close to seasonal through this week with the coolest day being Thursday at -4 for an afternoon high. Seasonal normals are now at -11 and -1.
Today’s temps in the north will be very mild. Expect highs around 6 or 7 degrees in Thompson and Norway House, 5 degrees for a high in Flin Flon.
It’s a different story along the Hudson Bay coast. There is a wind warning in place for Churchill and York regions this afternoon.
A cold front will push through later in the day bringing some snow and very strong winds.
Weather Alert for Hudson Bay Coast Winds could gust as high as 90km/h later this afternoon and evening producing blowing snow and reduced visibility. The temperature will also drop sharply in the wake of the system. .

This will be a fairly quiet week for significant weather across the south. We are entering an ‘Omega Block’ set up which means not a lot of change in our weather over the next few days at least.
This kind of blocking pattern has the jet stream heading north (ridging) over the prairies with upper troughs east and west. It kind of resembles the Greek letter omega, thus the name.
Omega Block Pattern Setting Up This Week By the weekend, we’ll see that pattern eroding somewhat bringing in some cloud cover and possibly a few showers by Saturday.
In the meantime, clear skies are the main weather feature and the risk for fog on Monday night into Tuesday morning. That chance for fog is followed by sunshine Tuesday afternoon.

You’ve heard me talk about the Urban Heat Island when discussing the difference in temperature readings between the airport and downtown. Well, today is a perfect example of that.
As of noon, we have a temperature of -13 at YWG and a reading of -5 at The Forks.
The airport is a snow covered field. Fresh snow reflects 95% of the in-coming solar radiation (95% albedo) where as the downtown is not only darker in colour, the concrete in the buildings and streets absorbs and holds the heat from the sun.
Sun angles are getting a little higher and winds are light helping create this Urban heat Island.
My forecast high is for today is -3, but if you only look at the airport temperature, you’ll think I’m ‘out to lunch.’ The -5 reading. I think, is truer to our living environment so I feel the -3 is a good call at this point and gives you a better idea of what kind of weather we’ll experience as we go through our day.
For the weekend, I continue to track a clipper that originally looked like occasional flurries for Saturday, but now looks a little more organized.
Expect light snow beginning in the morning. There’s not a lot of wind involved and we could be cleaning up 2-3 centimetres by the end of the day. The winds do pick up slightly and shift to the northwest Saturday evening.
Futurecast (RPM Model) calling for snow Saturday Sunday starts with cloud cover here in the Red River Valley (sunshine to the west) but we’ll clear west to east in the afternoon with a comfortable and seasonal high of -2. It will be a little on the breezy side though.
Next week looks uneventful for the most part with lots of sunshine most days and high between zero and 3 degrees by the end of the week.
A nice, slow melt is exactly what the soil needs at this point.

As expected, the cloud will be a more prominent feature in our weather today across the south. I’m also seeing a few light flurries on radar to the west of the Red River Valley but very light and headed in a southeasterly direction.
Flurries to the west as of noon Temps today will get to -4 or -5 all across the south and winds will be fairly light out of the south.
Not much change in that weather for Friday. Sun/cloud mix and a high of -3. Cloud does roll in for the weekend though as a little clipper spreads some occasional flurries across the south.
By Sunday afternoon, we are back into the sunshine and it looks like that will stick around for a few days into next week.
