John Sauder weather blog Live

John Sauder, CBC's meteorologist in Manitoba, keeps track of weather moving across the province.

We are into a very dry and sunny stretch of weather here in southern Manitoba. An upper ridge across the prairies continues to pump in the heat.

Temps in southern Saskatchewan and Albert, again yesterday, were in the 30 degree range. The ridge is gradually shifting east so expect similar temps in western Manitoba over the weekend.

Here in the Red River Valley, we’ll be in the mid 20’s at least on Saturday and close to 30 degrees by Sunday.

We can also expect some windy conditions along with those warm temps. Winds will be strong southerly both Saturday and Sunday.

Temps across most of the north on Saturday will be just as warm. In Churchill, it’s a different story though. You’ll wake up to a temp in the mid teens and get cooler through the day, 8 degrees or so by late afternoon.

John's Weather Journal for September 5th

The major weather theme this week as the kids (and teachers) head back to school is the gradual warm up and summer-like conditions I’m expecting for the weekend in southern Manitoba.

Tuesday night will be the coolest. 4 degrees in Winnipeg. Slightly cooler outside city limits. After that, temps gradually climb back into the mid to upper 20s for the weekend.

Something to keep in mind, at this time of year, when we get warm, it’s usually with the help of a gusty wind. Seems like that will be the case on Saturday and Sunday here in the south.

John's Weather Journal for August 18th

After this morning’s rain (2-4mm Wpg) we have lots of sunshine today, although it is hazy.

The fires that are causing the smokey and hazy conditions are in the northern Prairies and north of 60. We’ll be dealing with this for a couple of days at least depending on where you are.

Saturday will be the warmest day we’ve seen in a while. I’m expecting a high close to 30 degrees but a gusty wind along with that heat.

A cold front passes Saturday evening sparking a few evening or overnight thunderstorms. Those could even happen during the performances at Interstellar Rodeo at The Forks.

Behind that front, winds shift to the northwest, then west on Sunday. expect sunshine and slightly cooler conditions Sunday and Monday.

My forecast for the eclipse on Monday is partly cloudy with a high in the mid 20s. Hopefully, the cloud will hold off for the eclipse which starts at around 2pm and peaks at 2:43pm. (71% eclipse for sthrn MB)

The rest of next week, at this point, looks very sunny with temps close to seasonal (11/24).

John's Weather Journal for August 17th

After a foggy start to the day, we have a sunny and hazy afternoon and evening to enjoy. Warm too. My forecast high is 28.

Seems like any rain we see here in the Red River Valley over the next couple of days will happen while we are sleeping. Some of that may happen tonight.

For western sections like Brandon, it could be more like a late evening shower.

The rain moves east on Friday leaving us with a sun/cloud mix and a cooler high of 26.

Saturday will be the warmest day we’ve seen in a while. I’m expecting a high close to 30 degrees but a gusty wind along with that heat.

John's Weather Journal for August 17th

It was a nice, gentle, calm type of soaking in rain early this morning. Just what we needed. The main band of rain has moved of to the east of the Red River Valley, now over Kenora.

Here in southern Manitoba, it’s clearing earlier than I thought it would but I do see a couple of isolated showers popping up to the west. I’ll watch those through the afternoon.

Skies will be clear tonight followed by a sunny and warm day on Thursday. There is a slight chance of a shower overnight on Thursday but very slight.

Friday will have a mix of sun and cloud with a chance of an instability shower in the afternoon. I also still have a chance of a sprinkle in the RRV overnight Saturday into Sunday.

Temps stay warm through the weekend. The normal high is 25 and we’ll be there or above through into mid next week.
