So, in one week, we went from record low temps to a few record high temps in Manitoba on Monday. Winnipeg didn't quite get there but it was close, within a couple of degrees. Our high was 5.0 degrees. The mild trend does continue this week as Mother Nature throws a few quick moving disturbances at us.
The first one is happening today (Tuesday) as a couple of centimetres of snow scoots along the international border. That system is dropping as much as 12cm in northern sections of North Dakota. We'll just be cloudy here in Winnipeg with a few sunny breaks.
Wednesday brings a weak low through the south so there is a chance of afternoon flurries but not much snow - only a trace to a centimetre.
Thursday, the sun appears again but winds pick up late in the day so plan your activities earlier if you want to avoid a south breeze gusting to 50 km/h by about 3 or 4 in the afternoon.
Friday is a transtion day into a cooler weather pattern for the weekend. Expect a cloudy and mild day with temps starting at -5 in the morning, getting to around zero in the early afternoon, then dropping like a stone in the afternoon. That's also when winds pick up from the northwest behind a cold front. We'll likely be colder than -10 by the early evening.
We'll be back into the mid minus 20s by Saturday morning, only reaching -16 or so on Saturday afternoon.

We're not used to seeing cloud cover but that is what greeted us this morning around Winnipeg. Expect a sun/cloud mix today with skies clearing this evening and overnight.
That leads us into a cooler overnight temp at around -25 degrees. Friday will be bright with a high of -13.
On Saturday, a weak disturbance moves in with cloud, breezy conditions and some light flurries in the morning and afternoon. This isn't a big accumulating snowfall and we will get back to seasonal conditions at -6 for a daytime high.
Sunday and Monday really start to warm up. Streets will be getting messy again (so will your vehicle) as temps rise to the freezing mark or above.
Next week starts with a mild daytime high on Monday but we gradually settle back into seasonal conditions mid week and it looks like there might be another round of flurries on Tuesday.

Well, yesterday, the Extreme Cold Warning ended after being in effect for about 11 days. Over 260 hours in a weather warning for southern Manitoba. It was, and is, still rather cold outside for this time of year, but we are heading into some milder weather as the weekend approaches.
Expect plenty of sunshine today and, as I write this at noon, we have already reached my forecast high of -16 degrees. Tonight, clouds roll in and we'll see a few flurries overnight along a weak upper level disturbance. On Thursday, it's back to a mix of sun and cloud.
Each day going forward, we'll get a couple of degrees warmer with varying amounts of sun and cloud. On Saturday, another disturbance moves in with cloud, breezy conditions and some flurries in the afternoon. This isn't a big accumulating snowfall and we will get back to seasonal conditions at -6 for a daytime high.
Sunday and Monday will feel tropical at zero and +3 degrees respectively. Next week, we settle back into seasonal conditions and it looks like there will be more cloud and some more light snow.

Finally, we are getting above -20 degrees. Many are saying the cold snap is over but that's still 10 degrees colder than the normal seasonal high of -8 degrees. We will continue to warm up this week but, for now the, the Extreme Cold Warning is still in place.
As you can see in the 7-day forecast below, we get back to seasonal temps by the weekend and above freezing by Monday next week.
On the weekend, several cold temperature records fell. We had record cold temps on Saturday, Sunday and Monday mornings and not just in the south, but across northern Manitoba as well. Saturday seemed to be the coldest day overall. In Lynn Lake on Saturday morning, the temperature dropped to -45.4C breaking the old record of -43.9C set in 1965. Records have been kept there since 1952. Thompson was at -45.8C on Saturday breaking 42 year old record and The Pas was at -40.8C breaking a record from 1936. These are just a few of the records broken. The list is long.
Here in the south, most will look forward to a break from the extreme cold that is on the way later this week.

The only real change I have made in my forecast for the next couple of days is in the temperature column. I have adjusted the numbers down slightly for today, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We don't get out of the -20s until Monday. That will be a 9 day stretch with temps at -20 or colder. The last time that happened in February was 1914. If you look at data that includes January, we had a 17 day stretch of temperatures at -20C or colder (that includes daytime highs) back in 1996. Of note, February 1st, 1996, the daytime high at the airport was -38.6C. Now that's cold!
The Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect for all of southern Manitoba and most of the north. Generally, we don't really see a change in the pattern until early next week. In these conditions, frostbite can occur on exposed skin in less than 10 minutes.
The normal high is now -9 but, by the time we get to a temperature above -20 (maybe Monday) the normal high will be -8. So, still really cold but at least it's a little more manageable.
There is no snow in the forecast over the next week and tons of sunshine. By the end of next week, perhaps into the weekend
(February 20th) we should see minus single digits across the south. That'll feel down right tropical!!

I seem to remember that February 1996 was a particularity cold month. We had a couple of days in Winnipeg in the -40s and we had a long stretch of days where we never rose above -20 degrees C. This current cold snap will likely get us to the 8 day mark of not rising above -20 degrees so it's fairly significant.
The Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect for all of southern Manitoba. Generally, we don't really see a change in the pattern until early next week. Thursday through Saturday are the coldest days temperature-wise, but winds are quite light during that period. In these conditions, frostbite can occur on exposed skin in less than 10 minutes.
