Today will be the coolest day going forward over the next almost week. Our highs today across the south will be close to the freezing mark and there is a slight chance of a passing flurry this afternoon. This won't be an accumulating snow,
Skies should start to clear again into the evening hours, and for sky watchers, that would be good news. The Northern Lights were spectacular last night and are expected to be active again tonight. For a chance to see them, head away from light polution after 10:30, look up, and wait! No guarantees. There is also a chance for some patchy fog tonight into Thursday morning.
Starting Thursday, we will see afternoon temps above zero for the rest of the week and into the weekend. High single digits likely as we approach Saturday and Sunday.
Still early to be talking about next week with a great deal of confidence but the forecast guidance is still suggesting that we'll see a strong system bringing wind and snow late Tuesday and through Wednesday and Wednesday night next week. I'll watch the development of that guidance carefully and keep you posted. Remember, any small change in track or speed at this point, means a big change in the forecast 7 or 8 days in the future.

That's right, 5 degrees today, but there's a catch. We get there by about noon, then see temps fall through the afternoon to about -1 by 4pm. It'll be windy as well with gusts to 50 km/h from the northwest during the early part of the afternoon.
Tonight will be the cooler night this week. Expect a low of -12 into Wednesday morning, then a high of zero in the afternoon.
There is nothing to speak of as far as precipitation is concerned, at least not yet. Temps will be in the "snow eating" range for the rest of the week and the weekend and there will be varying amounts of sun and cloud through that stretch.
Probably way too early to be mentioning this but I will anyway. Some of the long range guidance is looking at a strong system bringing wind and snow around Tuesday and Wednesday next week. I'll watch the development of that guidance carefully and keep you posted. Remember, any small change in track or speed at this point, means a big change in the forecast 7 or 8 days in the future.

John's Weather Journal March 1
I guess you could say that March came in like a lion with a morning temperature of -27 at YWG this morning, but it will quickly turn into a cute little lamb by Tuesday afternoon. This will be a mild week and lead into a very mild weekend. Expect lots of melting on our very thin snowpack.
We are entering meteorological spring and coming out of our meteorological winter months of Dec., Jan., and Feb. What stands out to me is how dry winter was. It was our 4th driest February and our 5th driest meteorological winter on record in Winnipeg. We recieved just 3.3mm of precipitation in February and just 24.8mm in that 3month period. These numbers may be slightly underreported from the airport but the gauge has recently been updated and improved.
Temps will rise across the south tonight and rise further Tuesday to 5 degrees. We fall back slightly on Wednesday but highs toward the weekend really warm up.
The winter sports season will definitely take a hit this week.

Today's sunshine will be accompanied by some gusty winds this afternoon. Expect gusts to 50 km/h out of the south and a breezy but mild evening ahead. Temps only drop to -2 overnight.
Friday will be an interesting day of timing out a cold front passage that will really change things up for the weekend. We'll get to zero or even +2 in the early afternoon here in Winnipeg and areas along the Trans-Canada highway, but from the north, a cold wedge of air moves through late in the afternoon, or earlier/later depending on where you are. It looks like late afternoon for the Winnipeg region. Expect temps to fall sharply by about supper time. By 9pm, we should be at around -10 degrees with northwest winds blowing at 30 to 40 km/h. There will also be a band of snow along or just ahead of the cold front. I'm expecting 1-2cm on Friday afternoon.
We'll be back into the mid minus 20s by Saturday morning, only reaching -16 or so on Saturday afternoon. Both days on the weekend bring a chance of flurries in the afternoon.
By Monday, we are back to seasonal temps, even milder for the rest of next week.

Not much sun to be had today here in the southeast. There is an area of light snow moving through the Red River Valley early in the afternoon. I'm not expecting much accumulation at all, perhaps a centimetre or so south of the city. Flurries will linger into the evening hours followed by clearing into Thursday morning. While we pause at -6 today, Thursday gets mild again, but windy in the afternoon.
Expect a high of +1 in Winnipeg on Thursday and the rest of the south should be within a degree of that number as well. Winds gust to 50 km/h out of the south in the afternoon.
Friday is what I like to call a transtion day. A cold front will approach from the north bringing with it much cooler air just in time for the weekend. Expect a cloudy and mild day on Friday with temps starting at -3 in the morning, getting to around zero in the early afternoon. Temps really drop quickly behind the cold front but the timing is a little uncertain right now. It looks like late afternoon or early evening, the temperature tanks into the minus double digits. We'll also see some snow with that front, likely 2-3cm before the wind picks up in the evening.
We'll be back into the mid minus 20s by Saturday morning, only reaching -14 or so on Saturday afternoon.
