John Sauder weather blog Live

John Sauder, CBC's meteorologist in Manitoba, keeps track of weather moving across the province.

All in all, this will be a fairly quiet week for weather.  Daytime highs will be generally 7 to 10 degrees above the seasonal normal. It isn't that surprising to have daytime temps so high once the snow is gone.  The darker surfaces will really soak up that incoming solar energy.
Monday is a breezy day with south winds at 30 to 40 km/h.
Tuesday will be cloudy with lighter winds but there is a weak system and an associated cold front offering up some flurries in western sections of southern and central Manitoba early in the day, then an afternoon sprinkle to the Red River Valley and southeast Manitoba.
On Wednesday, we return to brighter skies, then temps get even milder toward the weekend.
Friday and Saturday both look quite windy so plan accordingly.

As expected, a few flurries move through the region in the late morning and early afternoon. There is also a hefty wind that is blowing some of that light snow around. Low visibility would be very localized and not widespread.
To shovel - or not to shovel?  I say wait for it to melt tomorrow. We'll be back above freezing for daytime highs and the sun returns and stays for several days. As a matter of fact, I think the sun will appear this afternoon once the cold front moves a little farther to the southeast.
It's a mild weekend ahead for the south with sunny highs in the 7 or 8 degree range.
And a reminder, this is the weekend we turn our clocks ahead and start Daylight Saving Time.

A much quieter day on the weather front. That includes central Manitoba where the snow piled up yesterday. In the north, there is a weak low that will drop 2-5cm of snow in areas like Flin Flon, The Pas, Thompson, and Gillam today and into tonight.
Here in the south, the sun will try to poke through the clouds more and more as the afternoon progresses.
A cold front attached to that low will cross the south on Thursday early in the day and may drop a few flurries, but I'm not expecting much in the way of accumulation. I also think the sun will appear once again in the afternoon on Thursday.
From there, it's a string of sunny days ahead. I have bumped Friday's high way up to +2 and dropped the snow out of the early next week forecast. Those changes are due to the change in speed and track of certain systems as I sort out the next 7 or 8 days of your weather.

The Warning for heavy snow is still in effect for the central part of Manitoba. We currently (as of 1pm) have snow falling in Brandon (mixed with rain) and heavy snow falling in Dauohin. At the same time, the sun is peeking through and it's 12 degrees in SE Manitoba. That is a very tight thermal gradient.
In Winnipeg, we've had 2-3mm of rain and we will likely see a few more showers today but not much sunshine and not much movement on the thermometre either.
Cooler weather (closer to seasonal actually) arrives for Wednesday and the rest of the week with Friday being the cooler day of the bunch.
With that cooler weather, lots of sunshine takes us toward our next weekend. We also warm up to plus temps on the weekend.

As of mid day, we are already above our record high set in 1902 at 6.7 degrees. I will say this though, it's not too hard to beat 6.7 at this time of year. Lots of double digit temps today across the south. We'll shoot for a high temp of 13 here in Winnipeg.
That Colorado Low I was talking about last week for mid this week is on track to deliver a significant snowfall in central Manitoba on Tuesday. The warning is for 10-20cm of snow from the Parklands region across the Interlake. There is potential for more than 20cm around Riding Mountain and Dauphin. This far south, it'll be mostly rain showers under a dreary sky and winds get stronger through the day.
Cooler weather (closer to seasonal actually) arrives for Wednesday and the rest of the week with Friday being the cooler day of the bunch.
With that cooler weather, lots of sunshine takes us toward our next weekend.

Again on Thursday night, there is also a chance for some patchy fog into Friday morning.
Afternoon temps above zero for the rest of the week and into the weekend. High single digits likely as we approach Saturday and Sunday.
Still early to be talking about next week with a great deal of confidence but the forecast guidance is still suggesting that we'll see a strong system bringing wind and snow late Tuesday and through Wednesday and Wednesday night next week. I'll watch the development of that guidance carefully and keep you posted. Remember, any small change in track or speed at this point, means a big change in the forecast 6 or 7 days in the future. The Euro model keeps the whole system to the south of us. Stay tuned on that one.
