Hi there. This is CBC Forum, our new attempt to encourage a different kind of conversation on our website.
-
Today, we are discussing Friday's shootings in the small northern community of La Loche, Saskatchewan, home to about 3,000. Four people were killed in the violence and several others were injured. You can read the latest on the story below.
A small community in northern Saskatchewan is in mourning after shootings at two locations — including a school — left four people dead.
-
We want to hear from you on La Loche, whether it be thoughts, questions or condolences.
-
First of all my condolences to the victim's families. We simply must take steps to prevent these terrible tragedies. Does it make sense to hire armed security staff, to give students and staff a better chance against a determined, armed assailant? One precious young life lost is too many!
-
In times like this we are all a Canadian Family; We love you and care for you all in La Loche.
-
Some of you are weighing in with personal anecdotes. Here's a comment via this forum from Ken Babinchak.
I teach middle school on [a] northern reserve. I couldn't bear the thought of losing my students or my ed. assistant in this fashion. Spirit bless them all.
-
-
My thoughts go out to all of those who have been touched by this terrible tragedy. There are many unanswered questions, but that can wait.
-
I would like to send my condolences to the families and friends of those who died and those who were wounded. This is a wound in the heart of Canada, we are one family and when one is killed or wounded we all fee pain.
-
Lets also treat with some compassion the family of the perpetrator - they are also suffering their own personal agony.
-
Heartbreaking. This community is in my thoughts today... Love + support sent their way... Let's hug our little ones a little longer today..
-
From one small isolated northern community to another, our thoughts are with #LaLoche.
-
My sincere condolences to everyone affected by this terrible tragedy.
-
1 victim is too many, especially in a "safe" place. So sad for these familys .... prayers & hugs
-
We are receiving an outpouring of condolences. Here's another personal anecdote from live blog commenter fzbw9br.
I have been to La Loche on many occasions in the past, and met many of the folks up there. My deepest condolences to the Families of the Victims, and too, to the Family of the shooter, they may have a great guilt to deal with.
Have any of you been to La Loche? If so, please share your stories about the town. It is a Dene community nestled on the shores of Lac La Loche and is home to about 3,000 people. -
My thoughts and prayers to all in La Loche. My heart goes out to the families and the victims. I was an education assistant for over thirty years, my prayers to her family. May they find some comfort in their days to come. Bless you all.
-
We must strive in EVERY community to ensure situations like this don't happen. Pay attention to those around you. Simply asking, "How are you?" can be an important one to ask.
-
My condolences to family and the community. A terrible thing has happened.
I do hope some insight can be provided so something can be learned on how to prevent such a thing from happening again.
To live life always fearing a tragic event such as this would only make things worse for all. -
My condolences to all in La Loche...I'm saddened and shocked at this event...
-
Police announced yesterday that a male suspect is in custody. Several commenters are talking about motivation, but there is no information on that yet, so any comments are speculation at this point. Here's a related comment from Turtle99.
Hopefully, we will be able to obtain info around the motive, such that we can all be proactive in prevention.
-
A tragic event for the community. It's time to address the issues which lead to such events.
-
I have a hard time seeing this happen again, Ecole Politique in Montreal, just outside of Edmonton, in Quebec where military personal were killed and a few days later in Ottawa at the Statue of the 'Unknown Soldier and again now in Saskatchewan. What is driving people to this sort of violence?
Not only is this affecting the families that bereave but the students and families that were physically unscathed plus the community and the rest of us.
Such a terrible loss, my heart goes out to all of you. -
Oh. This beautiful young girl is the image of my 17-year-old daughter. We must look up from our devices and "busy-ness" to really look and LISTEN to our children. ALL of our children.
-
My heart goes out to all the families of the shootings in La Loche. I pray that God will comfort them at this very tragic time. It is such a shame that young lives should end in such violence.
-
May you sleep peacefully in the chambers of God's heart and the families find comfort in their community of family and friends, also to the family of the young man who did this, May God Bless you also at this time. May Peace find you.
-
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and community of La Loche at this very difficult and very sad time.
-
My condolences to the loved ones of the victims in this horrible tragedy.
-
My condolences to the families and friends and the whole community of La Loche...what a terrible tragedy...as a parent I can not fathom the hell they are going through now...my prayers and thoughts are with you.
-
I think all of us are devastated by this news. The loss of the students and a young teacher at the beginning of her career is so very sad. I can't help but think that guns bring impulse far too close to horrific action.
-
I live in a small community and know just how devastating such a tragedy and loss will be to the community of La Loche where everybody knows everyone else. People of La Loche - all of Canada grieves with you.
-
Please keep your condolences, thoughts and comments coming. Here are some more condolences, first from our CBC Forum commenter Kathy Cahill...
I am so sorry. Canada is a much more sensible country regarding gun laws and I am always saddened when I read about something like this. Sympathies to the La Loche Community.
... and also from commenter Linda Foy.So incredibly saddened by this tragedy. The loss of the four victims will affect not just thier immediate families but the community for a very long time. My most sincere heartfelt condolences to all involved. May the loved ones left behind find some solace in knowing their loved ones are safe in the arms of God.Some have decided to weigh in with their thoughts on the shooting, including from forum commenter, Irene Doyle.every time I hear of a situation like this I wonder if there are ways we can teach peacefullness, ways of coping withour violence. I don't know how much of this is related to mental health but we have to get back to caring for one another in raising a country of caring people.
-
I keep hearing of shootings over and over again, and can no longer stuff my grief and horror. These violent nightmare occurrences, need to be understood, so they will never happen ever! There has to be some common phenomenon influencing so many to act in such diabolical ways. My heart goes out to all those affected.
-
Such beautiful shining stars taken from us too soon. Canada mourns with you, Laloche.
-
I grieve with the victims family's and the community. The loss of these bright young stars in this community is absolutely heart wrenching.
-
Very, very sorry about the losses suffered by the people of La Loche. Students--people--showed bravery to us all.. Myself, I will feel concerned until each and every fact is truthfully uncovered and appropriately dealt with. Hurt feelings and a hurt community seemed to be the objective, but I get the feeling that the community goodness and will of La Loche, and surrrounding cmmunities, will prevail.
-
Yes, I have been to La Loche many times. In the mid 80's, I ran a tow truck out of Meadow Lake, and did a lot of work in this area. Many, many good people, that lived in the community, relying on trapping for income until that was shut down, and then unfortunately on the government. My heart goes out to the families and friends of the deceased, as well as to the whole community, that will suffer from this needless act.
Many of the names you see in this incident have been residents of the area for many years. I only wish instead of throwing money at so many problems, our government, along with the Band Chief and council, would work together to better lives, and prevent more of this in the future. -
My heart goes out to the victims, familys and community. Love and prayers for ALL affected by this tragic event.
-
