Argentina's president is criticizing Europe's handling of that continent's biggest refugee crisis since WWII.Cristina Fernandez said Wednesday that Europe has fallen into a cultural decadence. She said she doesn't want Argentina to be like those countries that let kids die on their beaches. She was referring a 3-year-old Syrian boy who was photographed lying dead on a Turkish beach this week. The image has focused the world's attention on the wave of migration fueled by war and deprivation.Fernandez said Argentina is proud of its migratory past. It recently said it is willing to welcome more Syrian refugees fleeing the civil war. The government eased their entrance through a 2014 program. It hasn't specified how many have arrived so far. - Associated Press

Thousands of people, including many families with young children, are braving torrential downpours to cross Greece's northern border with Macedonia, after Greek authorities managed to register about 17,000 people on the island of Lesbos in the space of a few days, allowing them to continue their journey north into Europe.
Greece's caretaker government chartered two extra ferries and sent additional staff to Lesbos to speed up the registration and ease overcrowding on the island, where more than 20,000 refugees and migrants had been living in precarious conditions after arriving on dinghies from the nearby Turkish coast.
About 7,000 people waited in the mud of an open field near the northern village of Idomeni to cross the Macedonian border early Thursday, with more arriving in trains, buses and taxis. - Associated Press

Prosecutors in Hungary have ordered police to investigate a camerawoman caught on video kicking and tripping migrants near the border with Serbia.
Chief Prosecutor Zsolt Kopasz said they suspect the camerawoman identified in Hungarian media as Petra Laszlo of disorderly conduct and that authorities in the southern city of Szeged are also considering more serious crimes in the case.
After several videos surfaced showing Laszlo kicking a young man and a girl, as well as sticking her leg out to trip a man running past with a young boy in his arms, she was dismissed from her job at N1TV, an Internet channel associated with Hungary's far-right Jobbik party. - Associated Press

The International Organization for Migration says its estimate of the number of Syrians who have arrived in Greece this year has nearly doubled in just the last four days -- to more than 175,000 people.
The Geneva-based intergovernmental agency attributes the jump to both an accelerated influx of Syrians from the Turkish coast to nearby Greek islands in recent days and a lag by overwhelmed Greek authorities in determining the nationalities of those arriving.
The agency said that as of Thursday, a total of 175,375 Syrians have reached Greece this year, up from 88,204 counted in its previous tally on Monday. Overall, it estimates that 432,761 migrants have crossed the Mediterranean this year.
IOM's tally of Afghans, the second largest contingent, rose to more than 50,177 from 32,414 previously. - Associated Press
