Blocked by Hungary, migrants in Serbia have started entering neighbouring Croatia. But that brings them into a whole new danger zone -- former mine fields along the country's front line in its
1991-95 war.
Croatia's Mine Action Center says there are still 500 square kilometres of suspicious areas throughout the country, but all have been clearly marked. - Associated Press

Serbia has sent ambulances to the border after Hungarian police unleashed tear gas, water cannons and pepper spray at migrants trying to break through the wire fence erected at the border.
Some migrant women have pushed to the front of the crowd and held small babies and children above their heads as they faced police in an obvious appeal for mercy. Many people were in tears trying to wash away the gas from their eyes, as the Hungarian forces blocked the migrants from entering Wednesday near the Serbian town of Horgos.

"We fled wars and violence and did not expect such brutality and inhumane treatment in Europe," said Amir Hassan of Iraq, soaking wet from the water cannon and trying to wash tear gas from his eyes.
"Shame on you Hungarians!" he shouted, pointing toward the Hungarian police who were firing volleys of tear gas canisters directly into the crowd.Hungarian riot police uses a water cannon against protesting migrants on

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says he has been "shocked"
to see how refugees and migrants have been treated, and he calls it
unacceptable. He said that he had spoken by phone with Hungarian Prime Minister
Viktor Orban.
Ban also singled out Syria, saying that "people facing barrel
bombs and brutality in their country will continue to seek life in
another." - Associated Press

Turmoil at another border: Hundreds of refugees and migrants have demonstrated near Turkey's western border with Greece, demanding that authorities allow them to cross the frontier. Many refuse the food being handed out by a Turkish relief organization and pledge to start a hunger strike until their demands are met.
The migrants, most of them refugees from Syria, have been gathering at the border since the beginning of the week, hoping they will be allowed to cross into Greece overland instead of risking their lives at sea.
Authorities have given the estimated 1,700 people there three days to leave the area, according to an official in the provincial governor's office who provided the information on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the record.
The AP saw several people leaving in vans back to Istanbul, but many more appeared ready to stay at the border for as long as it took.
"We are not going back," Ahmed El Latif told the AP. "Either we all die here or we will go to Greece." - Associated Press

Refugee crisis: Thousands entered Croatia after Hungary border closure
More than 5,000 migrants have entered Croatia since Hungary sealed its southern border with Serbia, police said on Thursday, seeking new routes through the Balkans to western Europe. -

European Union lawmakers have backed an EU plan to distribute 120,000 refugees among member countries in a fast-track measure aimed at relieving migration pressure on Greece, Italy and Hungary.
The move in the European Parliament on Thursday means that EU interior ministers meeting in Brussels next Tuesday will be able to approve the plan if they can overcome opposition from a group of Eastern European nations. - Associated Press

Hungary's foreign minister says the European Union should take over the financing of refugee camps for Syrians in Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon and Iraq and, if necessary, support the construction of more
camps there.
Peter Szijjarto said Thursday that "the interest of people fleeing war zones ... is to wait out the end of the war as close as possible to their homes." He said Hungary was willing to make a "massive contribution" to such efforts. - Associated Press

Germany's vice chancellor made a new appeal Thursday to other European countries to help shoulder the burden of the influx of migrants.
Germany has made little progress so far in persuading many countries in the European Union to agree to a mandatory redistribution of refugees.
Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel said in a video message that Europe needs to move. "Germany is helping. The question is, who is helping Germany?" - Associated Press

Hungary has also announced its intention to build a 70-kilometre fence along its shared border with Romania to deter migrants, a decision the Romanian government protests.
A statement from Romania Thursday said the fence plan "did not conform to European Union norms" after Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto gave details of its length. Hungary has already built a razor-wire fence with Serbia and has suggested it may do the same with neighbouring Croatia. - Associated Press

Croatian police say 7,300 migrants have entered the country after the flow of people fleeing war and poverty turned toward the Balkan country instead of Hungary, which sealed its border with Serbia.
Police say migrants have been coming into Croatia through four
entry points. Authorities have been transporting the migrants in
trains and buses, but appeared to be overwhelmed by the influx.
Upon entry, migrants are taken to refugee centres where they are
registered and can apply for asylum. Most, however, have said they don't
want to stay in Croatia, and are eager to move on toward Western
Europe. - Associated Press
