Gavin Barwell, Conservative MP for Croydon Central in south London, says the House of Reeves, one of the destroyed businesses on the outskirts of the town, had been run by five generations of the same family.
"It's very much an iconic building in Croydon that survived the Luftwaffe in the Second World War, but a few hundred warped criminals destroyed it," Barwell told CBC News Network. -
"I don't know anyone who has all the answers today, but I do think there is an issue in the United Kingdom about family breakdown, about the environment in which some young people are growing up, with no positive role models, without any proper control and discipline," Barwell said.
"We've got to look at our school system, but I think we also have to look at the divisions in our society. And London is one of the greatest cities in the world. For most people that live there, fantastic opportunities. But clearly, some young people feel cut off and marginalized from those opportunities." -
