Wynne, Horwath face off in black community debate — without Ford

-
Good evening
My name is Haydn and I'll be your live blog guide throughout the debate and the rally tonight. I'll chime in with context and related links. We've got two CBC reporters on the ground with news, insights and analysis from tonight's political events.- Lisa Xing is at black community rally in North York, where premier Kathleen Wynne, NDP leader Andrea Horwath and Green Party leader Mike Schreiner will be facing off
- Mike Crawley is on the road in Sudbury, where PC leader Doug Ford is hosting a rally of his own
-
-
Where's Doug?
Ford declined an invite to the black community debate, citing his trip to Northern Ontario. He denied he was skipping the debate to avoid debating Kathleen Wynne, saying that would come but right now "we're travelling."He told reporters last he week he had "massive support in the black community.""There’s no other politician in this country. No other politician outside of Rob Ford that has supported the black community more than I have. And I love them. I’m going to support them."Doug Ford says no politician supports black community more than he does
Ontario PC leader Doug Ford says no politician in Canada, other than his late brother Rob, has supported the black community more than he has. -
Today in Ontario politics
The big story was that former top Ontario Liberal aide David Livingston was sentenced to 4 months in jail for his role in the gas plants scandal. Livingston served as former premier Dalton McGuinty's chief of staff. He was found guilty of one count of unauthorized use of a computer and one count of attempting to commit mischief to data in January. The latter charge, however, was stayed in February. He was part of the plot to delete records related to the government's decision to cancel the gas plans before the 2011 provincial election.Former top Ontario Liberal aide sentenced to 4 months in jail for role in gas plants scandal
A top aide to former Ontario premier Dalton McGuinty was sentenced on Wednesday to four months in jail for his role in wiping government computers after the Liberals cancelled two gas-fired power plants in 2011. -
The leaders weigh in
Of course, the Livingston sentence made for much politically charged fodder.Doug Ford bashed the Liberals as having "no respect for the taxpayer dollar.""The Liberals put $1.1 billion of your money into a gas plant project. Then they cancelled it during an election. We know why. It's obvious. They did it for votes," he said in an emailed statement.NDP leader Andrea Horwath also brought up the money lost in the scandal and called the incident "a selfish attempt to score political points.""The jail sentence handed down to David Livingston today following his conviction will not bring back the more than $1 billion in public money the Liberals blew to protect their seats ahead of an election, but it does recognize the severity of the Liberal attempt to cover up the gas plant scandal," she said. -

-
Ford and Horwath agreed ...
... to the three debate model. But not before Ford could get a (topical) dig in at the Liberals."We are not going to take lessons on transparency from the Liberals," PC spokesperson Melissa Lantsman followed up in an email.Kathleen Wynne challenges Doug Ford to at least 3 debates before June election
In a letter addressed to PC Leader Doug Ford, Kathleen Wynne says the debates will allow for "direct, unscripted discussions of the issues that confront our province's future." -
